Adventure is a path. Real adventure – self-determined, self-motivated, often risky – forces you to have firsthand encounters with the world. The world the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with the earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind – and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever again be black-and-white.

We live in a wonderful world that is full of beauty, charm and adventure. There is no end to the adventures we can have if only we seek them with our eyes open.

Hiking to the top of the mountain, literally using a rope and scaling the mountain…

This weekend I traveled to Cinque Terre, these five little fishing villages on the coast of Italy. Each of them are connected by hiking trails ranging from easy to extremely challenging, and it was beyond breathtakingly gorgeous. The first trail was flat and easy—it was called “Via Dell’Amore,” the lover’s path, and couples write their names on a lock, lock it around the fence, kiss, and throw the key into the ocean as a way to signify eternal love—and right along the water. Stunning. Then we wandered around the town and started on the next trail, but that time I may or may not have purposely dragged my roomies with me on the toughest trail. The path, or lack thereof, was made of all these narrow, rocky trails that went directly up the mountains of Italia. You would’ve been in awe. We got to his part in our hike at the top of this huge hill that said “Beach” and pointed downward, so clearly we wanted to go that way, so we followed the guys and ended up scaling a friggin’ mountain, rope and all (as pictured). It was pure insanity, and absolutely incredible. We then had to climb back up the mountain and hike some more, but I led the pack! When we finally reached the peak, one of the guys acknowledged how impressed they were that I was able to keep up with them, as they purposely didn’t want to have to hike with girls because they didn’t want to be held up, but he went on to say that I 100% held my own. And after that all I wanted to do was do a 2 hour hike to the next town, but everyone, even the guys, said no way, which was slightly disappointing, but oh well.
